Joseph H. Bacon

Joseph H. Bacon

Joseph H. Bacon was a resident of Barre, Massachusetts on July 17, 1862 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. E of the 34th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was a 21 year old Farmer at time of enlistment, wounded April 2, 1865 near Petersburg, Virginia and mustered out July 5, 1865.

He was born November 4, 1844 in Barre, Massachusetts to Willard and Fanny (Lamb) Bacon. In the 1860 U.S. census in Barre, Massachusetts, he is a 16 year old farm laborer living in the household of John T. Ellsworth. After the Civil War, he returned to Barre and his former job as a farm laborer for John Ellsworth. Between 1870 and 1880, he moved to Mansfield and was working in the handle shop owned by Lathrop H. Hooker. Joseph Bacon married one of his daughters, Jennie L. Hooker on September 22, 1880 in Mansfield. They adopted a daughter, Lina E. Bacon, born about July 1882 and may have had one more child that died before 1910.

On April 14, 1873, he applied for an invalid pension, No. 182,914 that was granted under Certificate No. 125,823. His widow applied for a pension on May 15, 1915.

Joseph H. Bacon died on April 14, 1915 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mansfield.

John A. Brown

John A. Brown

John A. Brown was a resident of Ashford on August 8, 1862 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 21st Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; he was discharged June 24, 1865.

The descriptive muster roll for the 21st Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry lists his age as 33 and his occupation as farmer.  He is described as 5’8” tall with a light complexion and blue eyes and brown hair.  His marital status is married.

He was born July 13, 1830 in Ashford, Connecticut probably to Eliphalet and Ermina (Preston) Brown. In the 1860 U.S. census in Ashford, he is a 30 year old farmer and head of household. John Brown married Sarah B. Simmons about 1856. Children include: Frederick E. Brown, born about 1857; Anna P. Brown, born about 1859 and Herbert L. Brown, born about 1861. After the Civil War, he returned to farming in Ashford.

On July 3, 1891, he applied for an invalid pension, No. 1,035,671 that was granted under certificate No. 817,017. His widow applied for a pension on April 30, 1908.

John A. Brown died on April 9, 1908 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mansfield.

William H. Griggs

William H. Griggs

William H. Griggs was a resident of Pomfret on August 11, 1862 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 18th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was captured June 15, 1863 in Winchester, Virginia, paroled July 15, 1863 and mustered out June 27, 1865.

He was born about October, 1840 in Woodstock, Connecticut to Titus O. and Susan (Harrington) Griggs; he was not living in Mansfield in the 1860 U.S. census. After the Civil War, he worked as a farm laborer, first in Hampton, then in Ashford. He moved to Mansfield after 1880 and was a farmer there. William Griggs married Julia ____ between 1860 and 1870; he married, second Susan M. Hooker. There are no known children from either marriage.

On October 20, 1898, he applied for an invalid pension, No. 953,613 that was granted under certificate No. 1,086,355.

William H. Griggs died on June 13, 1909 in Mansfield and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mansfield.

Francis P. Ide

Francis P. Ide

Francis P. Ide was a resident of Dedham, Massachusetts on August 25, 1862 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 43rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry; he was a 32 year old farmer at time of enlistment and was mustered out July 30, 1863.

He was born about 1831 in Ashford, Connecticut to Liberty and Lucy Ann (Pollock) Ide. In the 1850 U.S. census in Windham, Connecticut, he is a 19 year old in the household of Liberty Ide. His brother, Leander J. Ide, a 7 year old in the same household, served in the Civil War in a Connecticut regiment, enlisting from Mansfield. Francis Ide married Sybil Julia Guild on December 4, 1855 in Dedham, Massachusetts. Children include: Charles F. Ide, born December 18, 1857 and Addie Maria Ide, born November 19, 1860. Sybil Julia Ide died on December 13, 1861 in Dedham, Massachusetts. He married, second, Achsah Maria Engley on October 7, 1862 in Dedham, Massachusetts. Children from that marriage include: Arthur Ide, born about 1865; Henry Ide, born about 1867; Mary E. Ide, born about 1868; Lewis F. Ide, born about 1870 and William Ide, born about 1878.

Francis Ide was living in Mansfield, Connecticut by 1870 and moved to Ashford, Connecticut between 1870 and 1880. He was a cabinet maker in Dedham, Massachusetts but turned to farming in Connecticut.

On November 12, 1881, he applied for an invalid pension, No. 433,143 that was granted under certificate No. 618,431. 

Francis P. Ide died on May 3, 1912 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mansfield.
