Leander J. Ide

Leander J. Ide

Leander J. Ide was a resident of Mansfield on January 4, 1864 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 2nd Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery; he died February 9, 1864.

He was born about 1843 in Massachusetts to Liberty and Lucy Ann (Pollock) Ide. In the 1850 U.S. census in Windham, Connecticut, he is a 7 year old in the household of Liberty Ide. His brother, Francis Ide, a 19 year old in the same household, served in the Civil War in a Massachusetts regiment, enlisting from Dedham, Massachusetts.

Liberty Ide moved to Ashford, Connecticut between 1850 and 1860 but Leander is not recorded in their household in the 1860 U.S. census.

On July 5, 1864, Lucy A. Ide filed for a dependent mother’s pension, No. 56162 that was granted under Certificate No. 132016. According to the list of pensioners on the roll in 1883, she was receiving a pension of $8 per month, although it was incorrectly listed as a widow’s pension.

Leander Ide died on February 9, 1864 in Alexandria, Virginia and is buried at the South Cemetery in Ashford. The inscription reads: “In Memory of Leander J. Ide, Son of Liberty and Lucy A. Ide, Died Alexandria, Virginia, February 9, 1864,  AE 20 yrs. 4 mos. 8 days”.

Elijah F. Owen

Elijah F. Owen

Elijah F. Owen was a resident of Mansfield on November 8, 1862 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 21st Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; he died of disease January 27, 1863 at Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The descriptive muster roll of the 21st Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry lists his age as 43 and his occupation as operative.  His is described as 5’ 9” tall with a dark complexion and dark eyes and dark hair.  His marital status is married.

He was born about 1818 in Mansfield, probably to Elijah and _____ Owen. In the 1860 census in Ashford, Connecticut, he is a 42 year old farmer. Elijah Owen of Chaplin married Lucinda Brown of Ashford on December 17, 1843 in Ashford. Lucinda Owen received a widows pension and a guardianship pension was later filed for the minors of Elijah Owen.

Elijah F. Owen died on January 27, 1863 and is buried at the South Cemetery in Ashford, Connecticut.

Edward S. Wilson

Edward S. Wilson

Edward S. Wilson was a resident of Mansfield on February 25, 1864 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. H of the 5th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; he mustered out July 19, 1865.

He was born about 1845 in Ashford, Connecticut to Nelson and _____ Wilson. After the Civil War, he moved to Eastford, Connecticut and worked as a farm laborer. Edward Wilson married Julia A. ______ about 1867. Children include: Wayland Wilson, born about 1867; Rose S. Wilson, born about 1869; George C. Wilson, born about 1872 and Dwight O. Wilson, born about 1875.

On August 2, 1890, he applied for an invalid pension, No. 868,253 that was granted under certificate No. 908,699. His widow filed for a pension on October 20, 1899.

Edward S. Wilson died on March 18, 1899 in Ashford and is buried at the South Cemetery in Ashford, Connecticut.
