Progress on the renovations and repairs to both town hall buildings has continued steadily this past spring and as summer quickly moves along the conclusion to the work is quickly approaching.

Late March marked the beginning of Sarazin Contracting of Windham’s work to repair the rotted sill and framing on the north side of the 1843 town hall. Unfortunately once an old chimney was removed from the Northwest corner of the building extensive rot was found behind the siding and sheathing. Due to the separation of the chimney from the building water had been continually leaking into the wall. These repairs continued through most of April.

April also saw Tallis Historic Restoration of Medina New York begin work on repairing the wooden window casings and trim details on the 1935 town office. Included was the replacement of extensively rotted window sills with mahogany. This work also included lead paint remediation in preparation for new window sashes and other trim details repairs.

Late April and into May marked a transition into the inside of the 1843 town hall’s attic for the addition of structural retrofitting (also done by Sarazin Contracting) that needed to be added to the existing roof trusses. These retrofits will assure that the historic post and beam structure of the roof will remain solid and sound into the future. May also marked the start of electrical work for both buildings done by LePine and Family Electric of Canterbury CT in order to meet future needs and also to prepare for the demolition of the 1935 town office’s bathroom.

Early June saw the return of the Tallis Restoration crew as they continued their work on the town office’s windows and building trim. Trim repairs included patching a section of missing of trim on the southside of the town office where a chimney had once penetrated through the roof along with other repairs where needed. Tallis is also working to repair the cupola that adorns the roof of the 1935 town office. NECC Demolition Contractors of Willington were also on site working in the 1935 town office. Demolition work included removal of old insulation in the attic the dismantling of the existing restroom and widening of existing doorways which will bring the museum into ADA compliance. The building and office became off limits for a brief period of time as asbestos tile in the bathroom was removed.

At the time of this post new windows have begun to arrive on site and are being installed by Sarazin Contracting. With many trades on site things are moving quickly to a conclusion and expectations are for the work to be concluded before the end of the summer.
