At our November meeting, historian Bruce Clouette will present “Railroads in Mansfield”, an illustrated talk about the history and significance of rail transportation in Mansfield. Beginning with the New London, Willimantic and Palmer Railroad in 1850, the villages in the western part of town were well-served by the railroad, adding to the prosperity of the various mills and other businesses along the route and allowing Mansfield residents better connections with the outside world. The talk will also touch upon the two decades of electric streetcar service in the southwest corner of town and the even briefer history of the so-called “Air Line” railroad in Mansfield.

Bruce Clouette, long-time Society member and Mansfield resident, has been researching various topics in Connecticut history since 1975. He studied history at UConn, from which he received a Ph.D. Previous programs at the Mansfield Historical Society include “Rochambeau’s March through Connecticut” and “Farming in Eastern Connecticut.”

This program will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Auditorium at the Mansfield Public Library (54 Warrenville Road, Mansfield Center). General admission: $5.00; free admission for MHS members and students.
