“The Statue of Liberty and Immigration in Connecticut.” Presented by MHS Program Director Bruce Clouette. 7:30PM

This program will be available via ZOOM and is open to all at no charge. Please pre-register using the form at the end of this post to receive the log-in information for the program.

Bruce Clouette has presented several wonderful programs for our Society and has been a popular speaker for many other groups as well. He is a member of our Executive Council and for the last several years has served as our program coordinator. His new presentation focuses on the Statue of Liberty and immigration in Connecticut. He is especially well-suited to speak on this subject, having written his PhD dissertation on Irish and Italian immigrants in Hartford, Connecticut.

Statue of Liberty
The Statue was completely erected in Paris before being taken down, loaded into crates, and shipped to America.

For many years, the Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of immigration to America. This presentation will examine the many meanings the Statue has had, how it became a symbol of immigration, and the role of immigrants in its creation. The Statue itself was a gift from the people of France, but its monumental pedestal had to be built (and paid for) by donations from Americans.

The Statue is especially meaningful to Connecticut for two reasons: the granite for the pedestal was quarried and finished in Connecticut (by immigrants, as it turns out), and for many years immigrants and their descendants have made up a large portion of the state’s population.
